It was stunning. I knew almost immediately that I had found someplace special. My name is Jud Buchanan, and for nearly 20 years, Big Dipper Ranch has been a place where I’ve enjoyed the outdoors, gathered with family and friends, and appreciated the peace and beauty of the Virginia countryside. One of my favorite things about the property has always been the night sky. Far from the lights of the city, the stars here can be spectacular. The Big Dipper seems to make a regular appearance overhead, and eventually it became the perfect name for the property—Big Dipper Ranch, or BDR. Over the years, I realized this was simply too special a place not to share. Today, I welcome guests to stay in my glamping tents and experience a little of what made me fall in love with this land in the first place. I enjoy meeting guests when they arrive, helping them get settled, and then giving them the privacy and space to make Big Dipper Ranch their own for a few days. You can spend the afternoon relaxing by the spring-fed pond, take in the mountain views, sit around a campfire, or simply enjoy the quiet. And after dark, find a comfortable spot, look up, and see if you can find the Big Dipper. If you're ready for adventure, Old Rag and Whiteoak Canyon are only about 15 minutes away, along with wonderful wineries, breweries, orchards, and some of the most beautiful hiking in Virginia. Whether you come here to hike and explore or simply to slow down and recharge, my hope is that you'll experience the same sense of peace and connection to this place that I've enjoyed for so many years.
